Pastor Rudy Rasmus preaching at NEXT

Rev. Rudy Rasmus will be preaching Friday night at NEXT 2012, a United Methodist Student Gathering in St. Louis, MO November 9-11, 2012. Pastors Rudy and Juanita Rasmus have led the congregation at St. John’s United Methodist Church for 20 years and have helped to transform the spiritual landscape and the face of poverty in Downtown Houston. They started with just 9 members in 1992 and the church has grown to over 9000 members with around 1/3rd of the members who are or were formerly homeless. St. John’s Downtown is one of the largest and most culturally and socio-economically diverse churches in the United Methodist Church. Pastor Rudy has even worked with Beyoncé on projects to fight hunger and poverty. At St. John’s they attribute the success of the church to being “a compassionate congregation who has embraced the vision of tearing down the walls of classism, sexism, and racism and building the bridges of unconditional love, and universal recovery. Members of the St. John’s Praise and Worship team will also be with us to lead us in music for worship on the first night of NEXT!

Imagine What’s NEXT is a new collegiate student event Nov. 9-11, 2012 in St. Louis that will challenge and inspire United Methodist college students to consider and plan the next faithful steps for their vocations, their communities, the church, and the world.  All United Methodist college students and collegiate ministers are encouraged to participate in NEXT for a weekend of fellowship, worship, and inspiration. Through a series of short talks, speakers and leaders will discuss innovative discipleship and will challenge students to consider their own next steps in their communities and through future vocations. Students and leaders will be engaged together in dynamic worship, imaginative play, and affinity-group discussions.
